| Need advice. Please! I am working on my second scroll saw project and am working from a pattern that I did myself. I am not sure if I should cut the tail feathers right off to help with the shaping or leave them attatched and shape them as is. Help? Any ideas for this project?

Great pattern! It depends on the effect you want. Do you want Intarsia, segmentation, are you painting it, etc. I would try it all ways and settle on the one that you like best. You have parts of it already cut off so I am guessing you might be going for the intarsia or segmentation effect. Personally I think it would be beautiful as an intarsia project with different color woods. But it also would look good segmentation! Choices, choices. Try them all!!

| Thank you for your quick reply. I was planning on making it a segmentation style. I am very new to this so have not found a source for wood locally, though I have found a woodworking club about 45 minutes from here. I will attend a meeting there to see how I like it. I am sure they will be able to tell me where I can get wood. .......I do like your suggestion and will try cutting it different ways....My first project I did as segmentation and coloured it with an acrilic wash. It is posted on the bragging page but listed incorectly as an intarsia. I coloured it with the wash style too.

| I would cut and shape them individually you have more control that way.

| I agree, I think you should cut them individually. Looking at the 2nd set of feathers under it, it will be easier to cut them if the tail ones aren't there. Alternately, you could try shaping with a dremel if you want to leave them attached, but it might be difficult getting all the dremel marks out during sanding. |

| I too would cut them separately and shape them. You may have some fun with the effect of layers if you do.
Take care

| I would shape them with the sanding bands and sanding disk with my dremel . I used my dremel for most of my sanding on my segmentation and had real good luck with it.

| I would cut the wing out, raise it, and shape it seperatly from the rest, and either leave the tail attached, or maybe seperate each feather after i saw what it looked like wingless. Dale |
