Careful with those scans Ian. Canadian Tire money is legal tender. They went through great lengths to get it into BC. It is delivered by armoured car!

Wow! I'm so honored that you created a thread just for me! Now that I know what it looks like, tell me about it, please. Is it real money or is it a joke? Why is it called "tire" money? All I know is the dollar and we don't have anything else, at least not that I know of.

From my experience just about every town with a population of over 10, 00 has one ..!!The money is "real" in that you can use the value on it to purchase things at Canadian Tire (which isn't just a store that sells tires, as I thought before living here!) It sells all kinds of stuff - hardware, household, automotive, tools, gardening etc -kind of similar to Home Depot but the stores are generally smaller. When you purchase anything there you get a percentage of what you've spent back in "Canadian Tire Money" - I forget what the percentage is .. I don't know if people save it up until they have enough for major purchases - I tend to spend mine when I have enough for some glue or painters tape ..lol Oh and you can obviously purchase things from Kerry using it ....

Thanks for the explanation. That's pretty cool that they do that. Down here, all we have are those stupid membership cards. The only one that I have (out of probably 30) that pays anything back to the customer is Staples. They add up your purchases for a quarter, then mail you a coupon worth a percentage of the total you spent up to a maximum of $30. When you use the coupon there, if you don't spend the entire amount, they give you cash back. I like the Canadian Tire Money idea! It gives you current real time incentive to shop there since you get "money" back every time.

Canadian Tire will give you a percentage ( I think it's one or two percent) of your purchase in Canadian Tire money only if you pay cash or with a debit card. You don't get any if you pay with a credit card. It's really fair since stores pay a percentage of all transactions to credit card companies when their credit card is used. Credit card companies double dip: they charge you interests and charge merchants for the privilege of them accepting their card. I'm actually surprised that they also give the Canadian Tire money on debit card transactions since they also have to pay fees on those transactions. Come to think of it, the banks double dip too since they usually charge you for useing a debit card (unless you have fixed monthly fees with unlimitted transactions allowed) Still, there are fees I guess.

Marcel; It must be a little different in Quebec than in BC. I have a Canadian Tire Mastercard issued by Canadian Tire. I have a choice of paying cash and getting the funny money or paying with my CT Mastercard and getting 4% off my purchases. They ask If I want to use any of my 4% reserve and they will bring it up in the computer and tell me how much I have acumulated from previouis purchases.. I can say yes and have it deducted from my purchase or say no and let it accumulate. I can also go online any time to CT's site and check the balance of what they have stored in the system for me. Every Tuesday of the year is seniors day and they give 5% off all sales which also includes any service done to vehicles in their service department. Then the 4% on the card usage is also accumulated. It adds up on major purchases like tires or repairs or major tools and garden equipment etc. W.Y.

My wife works at Canadian Tire and we don't always get the CT money. One of the perks of being employed at Canadian Tire is we get a discount on our purchases. It is usually enough to cover the taxes. If I don't go for the discount, I get the money. My kids also get the money. If you are fortunate enough to have a Canadian Tire with a gas station then all of your gas purchases give you money. When I first came to Canada with my family back in 65, my dad sold advertising for a newspaper, He alwyas bought gas at Canadian Tire. The next year he had enough CT cash to buy all the camping gear we needed to go on a 3 week vacation through 27 states. Cant go wrong with that kind of credit.
