Default ? Pattern Design ?

Can anyone tell me if either "GIMP SHOP" or "PAINT NET" are good programs to design patterns? Liked the thread about making patterns using "Paint Shop Pro" but didn't want to spend that kind of money just to see if I can make my own patterns.
Any advice?

Gimp is basically an open-source version of Photoshop...I haven't made many of my own patterns yet, but it is definately powerful software!!!

Hi Troy

You don't need the latest expensive version of Paint Shop Pro or Photo Shop to design patterns. There are many earlier versions around which will do the job quite nicely. I use PSP v9 which I bought on eBay for less than $20.

Alternatively, the GIMP is very powerful software and I think that when used in conjunction with Inkscape, it's quite formidable. Indeed, I've recently been designing patterns using both programs - the one I attached to this thread was produced primarily with the GIMP and Inkscape, although I had to dabble in PSP a bit when it came to some aspects that I haven't yet mastered with the open source programs.

Oh, don't forget you can also use free graphics software from Serif such as DrawPlus.

Thank you both, Bob and Gill, for such quick responses. I thought I knew a lot until I keep reading and having to ask more questions. But I guess that is what this is all about. Learning, growing & improving.
What got me wanting to make patterns is I've always wanted one of both of my dogs, to be able to capture each unique personality. And then if I become efficient at it there are a lot of pictures that I have drawn & painted that I think I would like to try.
Thanks again and I'll look into these programs and who knows maybe someday I'll be making patterns.

Hi Troy, I have to agree with what has already been said. GIMP and Inkscape are both excellent programs especially to be free. Steve

I couldn't decide between PSP and PS. So just yesterday I downloaded GIMP and bought PSP X on e-bay for $24. (I already had downloaded Inkscape) One thing that speaks to PSP is that Andy Deane wrote a great (free) tutorial for it, Kerry_nf has a tutorial on his site, and MSN Groups has a whole course on patterns from photos using PSP. Andy also has a short tutorial for PS, by the way.
