It looks like you should mask your wife (talking photomanipulation here - not real life! ) Then you could alter the section of the pic with you on it without it affecting your wife - don't know if you can do that in MS photo editor though ...
I'd try going the other way, make it ligther not darker, it should give somemore detail. That's part of what I did when I made one of my folks. I'm using Corel so I don't know of the options in other programs.

no you can't all you can do is manipulate brightness and contrast then apply note paper effect I hace serif at home and I can try layering from there and see what happens, I just found out from our web designer at work that I have been doing layering all wrong lol live and learn

Don't mean to be a pain but I can see some issue the way you have it now. Try increasing the brightness a touch, you may have to increase the contrast a little also. The problem I'm seeing is getting things to hold together around the face. Don't give up sometimes it takes a lot of messing around to get it right for good cutting. Youwill be glad to take the time.
