| Objection to thread Kerry:
You did a very good design. Your cutting is also excellent.
However, I must register my objection to your attachment. This is nothing personal, nor am I taking any swipe at your skill, or artistry.
I doubt the original photo you used was your photograph taken by your camera of a public person, in a public place, by you or your agent. Therefore I suspect you did not obtain copyright permission to make a likeness of the original photo in a different media from the photographer or copyright holder. I, of course, don't know what permissions you did or did not obtain.
I also suspect you did not obtain permission from the estate of James Brown for the use of his likeness. Therefore, your granting a copyright permission to the members, and forum "guests", for personal use is meaningless.
There are other forums, not sponsored by this (or any) magazine, that are specifically formed for the exchanging, or giving away, free patterns for the scroll saw. These other sites most likely have specific legal overview to protect the site's owners from any legal entanglements on copyright violations.
But this site should, in my opinion, not be caught up in exchanging patterns that violate copyright or image trade-mark when used as a starting point in converting to a scroll saw pattern. The legal questions that could arise would distract the Owners of this site and the SSW&C magazine away from producing a fine quality magazine(s) that they publish.
I am sure other members have other opinions. They may, of course, add their own opinion to this thread; I do invite them to reply.
In a previous post, Kerry, you posted links to your own personal web site. I don't know what permissions you obtained for the use of the images you converted to scroll saw patters.
All them are very well done, and I think your taste in selecting what to convert to scroll saw is way, WAY, above par. However, IMHO, you may not have full legal copyright permissions for all those patterns. But that is your choice, and your web site. And should it come to it, which is most unlikely, your legal problems.
You should publish links here to your site, as you have done, for your skill is something all here should take notice of. I also encourage you to post attachments of scroll saw patterns of photos that you, or members of your family have taken.
Again I praise you artistry, and your skill. And please don't take my opinion as anything other than just my opinion.

| Unfortunately, Kerry...we can't allow the attachment to stand...
You are more than welcome to post a link to your site, but I'm going to unapprove the attachment.
Best regards,

| And as a general statement, Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts and Fox Chapel Publishing does not endorse the use of any photos or images as a basis for patterns that you do have explicit rights to use. Use of these patterns is at your own risk.

| Copyright can be a difficult issue to tackle and understand. As a complete side bar, I went to the Pocono Nascar Race this summer and actually read the fine print on the ticket stub. Nascar owns the rights to all pictures and any recorded content of any sort while you're at the track. Interesting eh? I used to do a LOT of celeb's when I was learning the pattern making process but tend to shy away from them now. It's just not worth the risk if you want to take this craft seriously as a mode to create a revenue income. There's so much available that is free in the public domain. Don't get me wrong. I have Dale Earnhardt Sr. on my sons wall but it's a one of a kind and ain't nobody gettin' it from him! LOL I appreciate the stand SSWC takes on this as a copyright on patterns I've created is as valuable to me as are the personal images are to celeb's to them and their families. It's not just about potential for making money, it's about pride, artistic value and most of all, ownership.
Andy
