Hi, Guys! I've been gaining some interest in learning more about compound cut scrolling projects. There are lots of projects which show up on the board which are complex in nature, and require a lathe and other larger tools and specialized techniques. I was wondering if it would seem feasible and practicle to start a "Compound Cut Scrolling" Forum where patterns or ideas and techniques could be shared. The Forum would feature projects which were made, or can be made, exclusively with a scrollsaw. It seems like the magazine has some focus on this technique, where there are featured articles and even a Design Contest category dedicated to it. Maybe we could carry that emphasis over to the Forum? What do you think? Would having a Forum (or sub-Forum, I guess) on this topic improve the Board as a whole? |

Shawn, since compound cutting clearly is a special technique, maybe there could be a poll to see how other people feel. The other issue you refer to, projects that require other tools, like the lathe, has come up before in the forum, and is an interesting one, since some scrollers are "scrollers only", while others use a variety of cutting and shaping tools. When I design projects, I deliberately stay away from anything that requires cutting and shaping tools other than the scrollsaw and sanders, even though other tools--table saw, jointer, router--could be used. This is primarily because I use a community shop and many of the other tools are not kept square or in good repair. At least I can control the condition of the scrollsaw, since no one else uses it very much ("sissy saw"). |

Shawn, The way I use the forum it wouldn't matter to me if there was a separate forum for compound cutting. I rarely look at different forums, I simply click on new posts and start from there. I also don't think there are that many different techniques that can be used in compound cutting, just as I don't find many techiques to fret work. Just my 2¢ worth Marsha

It is sometimes a little easier and more organized to have different (sub)forums...I'm like Marsha...i just start with all the "new posts" I don't typically look under any sub topics... Unless I'm trying to find old information. I suppose for that reason having it all under one category would be nice...Hmmmmm now that i think about it having a place to go back and look up things in a specific category (like our newer puzzle category) would be nice... I vote yes...

I am in support of the suggestion.

I am like marsha too, I click 'new posts' and go through them all when I log in. As for compound cuts, if making a new thread, I would use the general scrolling category. I love compound cutting too!

As I have only started wood working (fretwork) back in Janruary, just about everything on here is new to me.John B's tissue box plans gave me a reason to try new tools (old ones I have had and never tried before ((router )). I am finishing up a fretwork box from the new issue of our mag this morning. I use the "new post" link also, but will go into different forums also. I would vote yes. I need ALL the help I can get! ![]() Jerry

Shawn, you have a good idea, however, I am with Marsha on this one. personally I don't go to the boxed items. I go to last post also. mainly, because so many post on most of them. that have nothing to do with that board. and clicking on last post gets me to all the post I have missed. on all the boards. I do go to message board however to start a thread in the right place. most the time. HEHE. If someone only wont's to do only that kind of scrolling, then it is good that they can only go to that place to see what is going on. but miss a lot of other information on other scrolling. sooooooo, I don't care. just keep posting. and sharing. no matter where. I will see your post, no matter where you post it. and quicker.your friend Evie

Yet there are sections dedicated to intarsia, fretwork and puzzles; I have seen no complaints about people viewing only those sections which are relevant to them and ignoring others, so why not have a section dedicated to compound cutting too? It would be consistent. It would also be consistent to have a section dedicated to inlay and marquetry.

I certainly don't mind adding them. The concensus in the past was that we were getting too many separate sections, but if that consensus has changed, I'm more than happy to add more threads. Sections like that help search engines find is easier, so I'm all for it. That said, I'm going to have to depend on the mods to help me get the posts organized; I simply don't have time to do it all my self. Bob
