I really hate to ask and then run.... but I think it is time for another thread, and the good news is. I am leaving for another week to a place without the internet..... so I won't post my replies soon. I have done some things that might touch on all areas and I still like making what I call shelf sitters and dust collectors. (for me, I love to look at portraits, and intarsia) but I like to cut Puzzles and shelf sitters (dust collectors) (which has it's own listing NOW) and I would like a section that contains the shelf sitters and word art. or is this a lost art.......... The magazine seems to be heading toward intarsia and away form the other. (LOOK.. I always say things that upset people and that is NOT my goal.. (I just think that intarsia and portraits are for artists).. Me, I just want to follow the lines and make sawdust.

John, I also love the puzzles and word art and shelf sitters and portrait. I love to make patterns for all of the above and really, and really like cutting all of the above. Intarsia, now that is another issue There is jut to much sanding, to much cutting to fit, sanding to fit and to many pieces of wood to mix and match. I think that a well done piece of intarsia is a thing of beauty. I consider intarsia to be somewhere between carving and sculpture, but it is not for me. I really love to see cuttings like the I "RAISING OF THE FLAG AT IWO JIMA" or "THE CUTTING OF BETHOVEN that Ladell cut for the Texas Picnic 2009 or the complex NA cuttings by Gayle, Sylvia, Gary Browning, the Jedi and many others. Again I'm not knocking INTARSIA. When it is well done it is beautiful, but what I like to do is complex fretwork, puzzles, portraits, shelf sitters and word art. To sum up what I'm trying to say is.....if it makes you happy, DO IT. If it does not make you happy, stay away from it.

There's a fair amount of "other stuff" that shows up in the bragging section and that is where I get a lot of inspiration. Going to try my hand at baskets, inlay, compound (again), more fretwork, segmentation, etc. May even try Jeanette's little intarsia cats--just to see if I like that part. In short--there is room on this board for everything anyone wants to cut with a scrollsaw--and a few things that weren't scrollsawed. It just might not have a separate menu heading. It all falls into bragging IMHO. As for portraits, I have a couple to do this summer and while it is fun, I don't plan to make it a major focus. I do some word art and name plates as a way to keep my hand steady, but again, I don't count on it to be a big part of the cutting plans.

Are you talking about the forums, or the magazine? I think there is a nice selection of different types of things that get posted on the forum. They are usually pictures others have done rather than patterns, but remember that the pattern section has only been here for a few months and most of the patterns I believe come from requests - I also like the mix of patterns the magazine puts out. It's got to be tough to figure out what to print and what not too - glad I don't have Shannon and Bob's jobs! T |
