Deb, for that size I use a hole saw and then drill for the axle. Larger size and I have a circle cutter that fits into my drill press. You can use a router with a circle cutter or a rotozip and dremel has an attachment for cutting circles as well.

You can use a string tied to a router as well if you don't have any of the above...LOL
I think I would use a hole saw and slow speed on the drill press.

G'day Deb,
I cut that size with a hole saw. I then place the blanks in the lathe and give them some shape and sand the circumference.

Before I got the lathe I'd put a 1/4" bolt through the axle hole, tighten a nut down on the wheel and chuck the bolt in the drill press. Then turn on the drill press and sand the edges and round the corners of the wheel.

I have just started cutting some wheels to make some toys for my grandkids and for that size I used a hole saw and to clean it up I did what JohnB suggest and that is to sand the edges and round the corners of the wheel on the drill press. You need to set it at a fairly low speed.

They make a cutter designed for wheels. Seems to do a lot cleaner cut than a hole saw.

Rick that's the one I was referring too. I don't have any paperwork or wrapper anymore thanks for finding this...

There are toy wheel cutters available to fit your drill press chuck but they are kind of pricey. If you need a large quantity of wheels it might be worth the price to buy one. Just google toy wheel cutter on your browser and you will find a supplier. A rosette cutter and a hole saw will work and will eliminate the excessive sanding.....Mike

I have the circle cutter that Rick posted, and it works very nice for cutting circles with the drill press.
