Deb, for that size I use a hole saw and then drill for the axle. Larger size and I have a circle cutter that fits into my drill press. You can use a router with a circle cutter or a rotozip and dremel has an attachment for cutting circles as well. You can use a string tied to a router as well if you don't have any of the above...LOL I think I would use a hole saw and slow speed on the drill press.

G'day Deb, I cut that size with a hole saw. I then place the blanks in the lathe and give them some shape and sand the circumference. Before I got the lathe I'd put a 1/4" bolt through the axle hole, tighten a nut down on the wheel and chuck the bolt in the drill press. Then turn on the drill press and sand the edges and round the corners of the wheel.

I have just started cutting some wheels to make some toys for my grandkids and for that size I used a hole saw and to clean it up I did what JohnB suggest and that is to sand the edges and round the corners of the wheel on the drill press. You need to set it at a fairly low speed.

i wouid go with john, the lathe is the way to go.you can even make them in stacks of 4,and sand them while they are on the lathe.

They make a cutter designed for wheels. Seems to do a lot cleaner cut than a hole saw. Woodworking Machinery and Tools - Circle Cutter for Wood, Sheet Metal and More - New and used sheet metal equipment sales. Hand Tools Sales, Des Moines, Iowa, United States (USA) |

There are toy wheel cutters available to fit your drill press chuck but they are kind of pricey. If you need a large quantity of wheels it might be worth the price to buy one. Just google toy wheel cutter on your browser and you will find a supplier. A rosette cutter and a hole saw will work and will eliminate the excessive sanding.....Mike

I have the circle cutter that Rick posted, and it works very nice for cutting circles with the drill press.
