Default Butterfly inlay

Here is a butterfly I just finished. Woods are, field Butternut, main lower wings Yellow Locust, dots and edging on lower wings Ebony, upper wings outer edges Claro Walnut, middle of wings Cocobolo, top of wings Aromatic Cedar, lower body Zebrawood, upper body Claro Walnut and antennas Ebony. The wood on the wings is book matched. Took about 4 hours from start to finish. ~10" X 14" X 1/4" thick.
The pattern is from Dover Designs.

Beautiful, Dave. Love the choices of woods/colors. The book matched pieces with a know is a very nice touch.

Beautiful! Nice colors. I'm curious - how did you cut it? Do you do the angle cuts? How thick is the wood?

Thanks to you all for the compliments.

I use the double bevel method. The wood is ~1/4" thick, stack cut and the piece to be inlaid (let in) is attached to the back of the plaque. I use one of two methods to attach it, pin nails or hot glue, depending on it's size. Small pieces are hot glued, large are pin nailed.
Using a FDPS 2/0 33 TPI blade with the table set a 2.3 degrees down to the left side (for 1/4" thick material). A flex shaft Dremel is used free hand to drill the entry hole, placing it so the hole is in the waste of the piece on the top and aligning it with the blade (the same angle as the blade in conjunction with the table), this allows for no visible holes when the inlaid piece is in place. When cutting, the plaque is turned Clockwise, this allows the bottom piece to fit into the top piece.

An aside: it is best to test cut on scrap of the same thickness to assure proper fit.

I hope this all makes sense.

He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
Many will see and fear
And will trust in the Lord.
