Default something wrong with the pictures?

There must be something wrong with all these intarsia and segmentation pictures. Its affecting me very strangly. I have a sudden and strong urge to..to...Gulp..Participate.

Ok all fun asside, I am seriously gonna try some insegmentation. Not ready for intarsia yet as i dont have access to all types of wood, so will attempt segmentation and dye or paint the wood. Thanks to everyone for posting pictures and affecting me so.

Teddy Just jump in and enjoy! Start off with segemntation, but remember that you can move on w with limited assortment of wood. I got some nice "blue" pine at Home Depot by looking through their stuff. Also they carry some poplar so you can find shades of green. Cedar or redwood is fairly cheap too. Have fun!

You will be amazed when you actually start looking at wood for it's hidden character. WRC has a lot of different colors in it and it is relatively easy to find and inexpensive. It is the same wood they make fences out of. Watch for it to go on sale.

Hi Teddy
- sounds like you have the first symptoms of what is liable to become a perennial disease! Go for it, and don't be shy. Open up a Work in Progress thread in that section of the forum and show us how you are progressing with the project you select. Its a great way not only to show your progress but also to ask for help and tips when you need them. Also as a newcomer it helps other newcomers to bite the bullet.

As the other Jim and Mike have commented on, don't get worked up on the lack of exotic woods. Use what you can find. Look for interesting grain in the wood you can source, look in the second and third grade heaps in the lumber yards where you will find a lot of interesting material at really good prices. Also, don't be afraid of using stains or washed effect acrylic paints or similar to introduce colour into your work. Most important! Make a start and have fun.

Looking forward to seeing your first project

Cheers!

Be very careful, Medic. I speak from experience. They will gleefully lure you over to the "dark side" and fill your head with dreams of wood with amazing color and grain. They will show you pictures of gorgeous projects made from bits and scraps. The next thing you know you will be the proud owner of sanders you've never heard of and talk about cutting and shaping and gluing and all sorts of things you never thought you'd care about. Welcome to the addiction..........they already caught me!

hi teddy

you are in for an addiction that won't stop. When I first started intarsia, I thought the exotic woods were the only way to go, but as others have said , keep your eyes open and look around and you are going to find a lot of great wood to try out. have fun and don't be afraid to make mistakes. my mistakes are hidden away, ready for who knows what.

have a good one
