A few tips that I think will make your life easier...

The little piece on the top of his head...pretend it isn't there

The little tips on the end of his tail feathers....ditto

When I make them, I cut all the head pieces and glue them all together before shaping.

You could cut all the feathers from one piece - saving time.

Use what you have, but I use blue pine, aspen, peruvian walnut and cherry.

Try to find an interesting piece of wood for him to be sitting on - really adds to the finished piece.

Of course...these are all just suggestions --- there ARE NO RULES !!!

I've had a few questions regarding the size of the nuthatch. (Nancy's printed at some 35 inches, it seems, which is just a tad on the large side, I think, unless you're John B .....). I'll never understand computers!

The dimensions it's supposed to print out is at 6.61 x 8.70 inches, and that's the size I make it. Of course you can always reduce or enlarge it as you wish. No rules!

And away we goooooo!! I spent about 30 minutes searching for just the right pictures of a real nuthatch which I have printed. Thank you Henriette for that great tip!! Then off I went to the shop to look for just the right pieces of wood!! That took a lot longer!!! I still haven't decided on the piece to use for the red breast!! I have 3 different species to choose from!! I just might have to make 3 of these little darlings!!

My first question is... how many copies of the pattern should I make? I have 4 printed, but I wonder if I might need more?? Hope to post pictures tomorrow. I'm so excited!!

4 will probably do, but print one to put your pieces on and a few extra just in case! You can always use the extras for your next one.

I printed my pattern last night, and looked at pictures of nuthatches this morning. Too many things going on today and tomorrow for me to get started, but will be there Monday morning!

Hi everyone,

Last night I cut out the body using Bloodwood. On the piece I have, there is a lighter area. I also cut the tree pieces out of Cherry. Still waiting for the Blue Pine.
