Default Semi-segmentation?

Well - after attempting many things, here's my first, completed item. It was a lot of fun especially since I had to make do with what I had - namely a saw that if the wood is any thicker than 1/4 inches it dances the tango all over the place (we call it Fred.) We've tried bolting it down, someone holding it, etc but nothing works. It's just old like me but can't get a new one right now.
Anyway, it's 1/4 cherry wood. It took quite a while to sand since only have a dremel and my hands to sand with. I still need to sand it again and spray it with some more shellac but was so tickled to finally finish a piece that had to post it. I also stained the leaves and stem so the rose would be lighter but alas - didn't work. Looks all the same!
I am now trying to make a mirror image of it. It has no backer since we're going to put them on the two doors of the entertainment center my husband built.
Any comments? Suggestions?
I do believe I'm hooked on intarsia! Or segmentation I guess it is!
Anne

For having to do this while waltzing with Fred, you did an admirable job. I'm no expert, but I'd call it intarsia. And a nice one at that. Very well done!!

Hi Anne - You did a fine job knocking out the segmented rose. It looks wonderful! Just imagine what you could do with a better scroll saw? Keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist. Sometimes you can find a real bargain there.

nice job Anne. Am curious as to why your saw is dancing all over the place. Is it an el cheapo and you are running it at full speed, Blade is in correctly, something loose on it, variable speed? Just want to know what might be going on with your saw.

Very nice Anne! What size blades did you try? Mabye a different size would help with the jumpy Fred - that of keep him off the cafeen

btw- if you're planning on putting them on doors - one Idea I came up with is to use magnets. Several inset into the piece and some on the back of the door. Haven't tried it yet but planning to.

Thanks for all the wonderful input!
It is an old and cheap Craftsman saw that only takes pin blades. I tried the conversion kit for the pinless blades - worked for a while, then couldn't keep the blade in. It was more frustrating than it was worth so I gave up. I'm not sure what # the blades are so will have to check tomorrow but I tried the widest first, then the skinniest if that makes sense. I guess rather than dancing you could say it "clunks!" Big time!
I'd also like to post who made the pattern - it's in a book that is down in the shop so will post it tomorrow.
That's a great idea for the magnets! Would never have thought of that. Would love to know if it works.
I found an old record album cover (remember those?) in the basement and cut it to glue the pieces on since I wanted it kind of flat. Hope that's okay?
Thanks! You all are the greatest!

well, even though Fred has his issues, its evident that you have coped nicely with it, and you turned out a nice looking piece. It does go to show, you dont need a big fancy saw to do nice work, you just need determination. Just think how easy things will be once you are able to retire Fred and move on to a young stud... until then, just keep up the great work!
