I made one of JGR's unicorns for a friend of mine and when I was drilling the pilot hole for the hangers in the back got jarred and the drill went all the way through the piece. Is there any way to fix this? If I take it apart to make a new piece, I suspect I might as well just make a new unicorn ;p It went through the aspen part of the mane. If it was in the walnut I wouldn't sweat it so much but that light wood shows every little nick.

I am not sure how this would look, but when making gun stocks, and making a change in my design - okay a mistake, I would take fine sawdust from the same piece and mix it with epoxy and place into the design change (mistake). It worked pretty well, but if you looked really close, you could still see a very faint outline of the space I filled.

Can you make a few more round holes and insirt dowls to make it look like part of the planed effect?
Next time measure the depth you need to drill and wrap tape on the drill bit just above the depth you need. And haveing done the same thing as you I try to do this in my small drill press where I have more control.

You could try cutting out just that piece and recutting a new one, then infill the backer board with a patch. I haven't done that one yet but I've come pretty close. Can you post a picture?

i HAVE DONE THAT ON MAPLE MUZZLELOADERS.

I read that trick from Janette and just about went looking for a frypan for the side of my head. One of those DUH things, so simple and easyier than turfing a piece in the bin.

I think drilling a few holes into the horn about 1/8th inch dia, and putting in a snip of contrasting dowel (like walnut) into each hole, as well as the oopsed hole, it might just make it look even better!

Magpie : I would agree with Janette's way of thinking on this matter, its hard when you got a project about done and something like this happens. It happens to us all that have been woodworking long enough !!! Sorry to hear this , and Good Luck Marshall

Regular Size Intarsia Patterns Page 3 It's the long piece right in the middle of the mane. She has seriously harsh fluorescent lighting in her office which really highlights every little flaw. I'll try cutting the piece out and let you know how it goes

Magpie, I will just throw this out there. but you say the whole piece is done, and a hole is in the main now. aspen, soooooo white right. I was just wondering. is there a way to use a drimale to cut a new main hair line in the main. putting some kind of filler in the hole, then along the new main line. to make it desaper. maybe some of the dust from the main wood used. maybe even doing it in a couple places. to make it the same looking wood look. I believe that any mistake is a opertunity to learn, and save. you could cut a new one. and learn from this exsperance. but don't dump this one save it some how. and keep it. you could make the line or more lines, and fill them with fairy dust. sparkaly yo might say. just a thought. your friend Evie
