I remember you all liked to see progress pictures so here's the next commission I started yesterday. I'm having trouble figuring out what woods to use so there's a lot of different kinds in there including figured and curly maple, soft maple, butternut, cherry, buckeye burl and even a dash of hickory. I'll probably recut the top of her head piece it looks kind of light. macypicforpattern1.jpg IMG_3449_1.jpg |

Oh yes, I'm ready to see you do this again. I love it because you are so good and I get so much from watching you go thru the process. I agree, the top piece is a bit on the light side. Tom |

It looks good. White oak, red oak, cherry, pecan, good colors , maple probably not, I'd sub maple to your hickory. Pecan is a close relative to pecan and sometimes sold as the same lumber although it isn't but is. Pecan is noticably darker like cherry but with better grain, or should I say more pronounced grain, since better grain is a matter of personal opinion and depending on project at hand. In the really dark areas like between the legs, perhaps a mahogany would be a good choice, stays with the dark red/brown tint, and grain is tighter as would be in a shadow situation. All your call, just talking out loud to help you think about options.

Janette, I'm with the rest of the gang. Keep those progress pictures coming. It is so enlightening to see how projects progress. Thank you so much. Hank

Well I finally got it cut out. I ended up using butternut, figured maple, soft maple, some cherry for the majority of pieces. The muzzle is buckeye burl, nose is ebony. The dog in reality is a little redder than the photo, but cherry would have been too dark and the fig. maple goes pretty "golden" with finish. Macycutout_1_2_1.jpg |

Janette Isn't that the easy bit done? Do you find the choosing and cutting the most difficult, or the shaping? I feel that when you have got that far, it can easily be spoilt with the wrong shaping - or even losing a piece!!! Sue |

Janette, beautiful work as usual. The golden retriever is my favorite breed of dog. I had one years ago and she was a wonderful friend. I've been following your progress on this and I think you've done a great job. David
