Default First attempt at inlay

This is a woodburning pattern that I adapted to fretwork and then decided to experiment with as an inlay . It took a lot of experimenting but I am pleased with the final result

Back is 1/8 cherry ply, hands are 1/8 maple ply , cut with #3 FDNS and #3 FD skiptooth , black felt behind, BLO and Deft

Thanx for lookin'

Robert, that is beautiful. I love that pattern of the praying hands. You have done a wonderful peice of art there. Where do I find that pattern? I would not believe that was someones first attempt if seeing it without you telling that it was. Great work. Steve

Thanx Steve, I'll have to find the book the pattern is in ......I have it here somewhere, I had copied it some time ago and just reworked it yesterday morning
The nice thing is that afterwards you have another pair of hands to mount. They're slightly beveled ( 7 degrees ) but it is not noticeable . I wish i had spent a little more time on this one

Robert, there's just no holding you back.

I am ignorant regarding inlay. Did you just glue the hands to the cherry ply?

Thanks for sharing the idea. It looks great.

Mike, with inlay the contrasting wood is actually set into the background. The surface is smooth all the way across. I stacked the wood and did the inside cuts first. I reworked the pattern so the outside was a solid line and no inside cuts met that line. After all the inside cuts were done , I experimented with a cut-off from the stack, changing the table angle until the top piece would drop tightly into the bottom . It ended up being 7 degrees for this one . Then care must be taken to cut in the correct direction to insure the angle goes in ( in this case )
I was tickled to death when the maple piece fit almost perfectly. A little glue and some sanding where the pieces met at the seam and it was complete
I then used the piece from the cherry and put it on a backer ...2 for 1
