Default The finished Cardinal

I finished assembling my Cardinal intarsia using a combination of the suggestions that you all sent me. We will see if it stays together over time. The Jet spindle sander and a light table were also very useful.

It was designed by Homer and Carol Bishop as a segmentation project that was meant to be colored with food coloring. I opted to use different woods and did not do segmentation.
It has 41 pieces and the oval is 15.5 x 13.5 inches.
The red is bloodwood, face and branch are walnut, beak mahogany, Eye walnut with black magic marker and Gloss Deft, leaves poplar, flowers ash.
The plaque is maple with semigloss Deft. I used Bartles rub on varnish on the intarsia.
Shaping the small pieces was a hoot, thank goodness for the cobwebs in my shop. They are great for the escapees when using the sanding mop.

I am not crazy about the plaque, something about it bugs me. It may be too light. I have no more time to putz with it as this is a mothers day gift for my Mom.

A very nice piece that you make there...
Being critical about your own makings is in my eyes a good thing, keeps you sharp...but i think that the background should be changed to something bit darker,...but that's my opinion.

But top marks from me...

Beautiful piece of work, Rolf. I personally like the contrast between the bird and the background and wouldnt like to see it too much darker ..perhaps something that is still light but with a slightly "redder" hue - if that makes sense?

It's beautiful, Rolf. Thank you for showing it to us.

Don't worry about the plaque - having the piece photographed against a black backdrop drains it of color somewhat. I'm sure that when it's mounted on a wall, you'll be very pleased with the outcome. This is a project you should be be proud of.

All I need is some blue pine. I now know why people like to use cedar for intarsia,
Thanks for the nice comments.

I think the cardinal is just sensational. And I think the plaque looks fine in the photo.

It came out spectacular!! You should be very proud- and your mom will for sure. Using bloodwood is a challenge for even the most skilled person- I used it once and ended up doing the majority of the easy cuts on the bandsaw it was so hard. the stuff is a bugger to cut for sure- but it sure is beautiful.
