I have no idea exactly what to name this piece, and would love any serious suggestions. It is way too hard for me to keep this hidden on the workbench. She is 85% done, obviously just have to cut and shape a moon, add a backer and apply a finish...the hard part is done anyhow. She is 37 1/2 inches from finger tip to big toe. the body is apple, from 1/2 inch thick to 2 " thick. approximate total pieces is 95. She definitely looks like an aphrodite/goddess of love, to me. Admin Edit: Converted jpg to PDF so no thumbnail would show to protect our child-safe rating.

Jeff, I think you should call her Candice Moon. I won't attempt to critique your work Jeff, but I have a real problem with her extended leg, I think it's too long for the rest of her body. Perhaps it's the picture, but when I measure her lower leg to the rest of her body, it appears to be approximately 1" longer then the lower portion of the bent leg. Other then that I think it's a great piece. Marsha |

I can see how you might think the one leg is longer, but you really have to see it to totally get it. The front leg is 3 times thicker than the back leg, it really comes out and down. part of it is a visual trickery because of the depth of the picture. I believe it is dead on. The back leg dips away and then forwards, so the true measurement of length for the back leg has to be shortened a tiny bit in order to be realistic in real life. The rough draft for this picture was not drawn by me, it was commissioned for me to do this...it was a long distance concerted effort between me and one of my trucking customers 400 miles away. I had a real difficult time with this drawing, so I passed it on to her to figure out the proper proportions according to how it was to be carved and then I repaired her drawing to become a pattern. She doesn't know how to draw a pattern per say as she is a pencil sketch artist. She pencil sketched it and simply didn't do any of the shading. It was about 3 months of short get togethers just to get it to what I felt it should be. I'm trying to capture the greek goddess look, but intermingle it with a more modern style. Candice moon is certainly worthy of consideration, thank you very much!

I think it's a bit harsh to say she needs a paper bag over her face. there is a few issues there that I am working on though. Her nose became smaller through carving, so it was chiseled off and replaced. you don't have the best angle of view, which doesn't help either. the drawing looks better than the product though still, although all the parts are identicle to the drawing. I'm still not happy enough with it and have been working on it for hours. It's mind boggling as to just what isn't right about it, but it isn't right somehow. I am contemplating eliminating part of her right cheek, which is left side of her face from our view, with a piece of hair. Somehow I'm going to figure it out.

Jeff, Take a time out, when one presses to hard to complete a project they sometimes lose their prospective and just want to finish it up. Stop drawing, and go relax, then come back later or tomorrow and start writing down some things that you think will add to her character. Don't start drawing until you finally "see" her completed. Good Luck... Mac www.macsimmons.com |
