Thanks, Anne. One of the reasons for posting the WIP is so that I won't quit in the middle!

looking great Jan. I know exactly what language you're talking about - I did an entire dachschund out of wenge and it was about 1" thick. Don't give up and just remember, the more you cut out - the more you'll have to shape...eventually!

Jan, you are doing great already. I am impressed with the work you have done so far on wood selection & cutting. Thumbs up!!! As for shaping, do it a little bit a the time....slowly but surely and it will come together eventually. You need to keep room for improvement so don't make this first piece too nice Good luck!

Oh, wow, just look at the puffin! Your second intarsia?? What is it with you people in this group! I've been at this for years and I STILL haven't attempted to cut a puffin out of wenge! Well, not a full-sized one, only magnets from 3/8 stock. Your cutting is excellent, Jan, and, yes, wenge is a beast to cut, that's for sure. I think it's worse than bloodwood or purpleheart. Sure wears out the bandsaw blades fast when it's being resawn. Smoke smells real funny too.

Just fabulous, Jan. One good thing about hardwoods is it's harder to oversand and remove too much wood. I just did that five minutes ago with a piece of butternut. Forgot it wasn't bloodwood, I guess. Anyway, just go a bit at a time and keep checking. Make lots of pencil marks to show that you don't want to sand below certain spots. You'll do just dandy. Looking forward to the next prog pic.

Great, just great. Never cut wenge and reading what people write, probably won't. Just can't believe this is your first. Keep going and keep posting pictures.

Jan,

You are really brave, to tackle wenge on your first intarsia (well, 2nd, but we will let Jim wait, my toucan isn't even cut yet. LOL)

The Puffin is really going to be a beautiful piece when you finish him/her.

Actually, this is the first. I have cut the body of the toucan and he has gone no further. Jim is giving me a horrible time about it. Cutting the wenge falls under the "If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough" heading.

I was all set to do the toucan, had printed the pattern and was selecting the wood when my hubby had another medical emergency and we had to spend several days in Las Vegas, hubby in the hospital and me living in the parking lot in the motorhome.

So, I had a reprieve, for a while. But, now that hubby is home and doing pretty well, I have no more excuses. LOL And, since I have to put my new DW788 to the test, I'm going to cut the toucan on it. I also have 3 other projects going, it's so much fun.

Jan,
The puffin is looking really good. I can't believe this is your first intarsia. I am impressed. As for that wenge, after what I read, I will never be using it. Please post more WIP photos, that is the best thing in the world for all of use to learn from. Thankyou

That new saw thing is more fun than is possible. Check out Post Your Workshop thread. We live in a motorhome full time. My workshop is a screen room attached to the coach.
