I have decided to give intarsia a try for the first time. Anyone have any suggestions for a first piece?

Lots of places to start and make sure you take a picture of your first project. It's always fun to see the difference a year from now. The toucan pattern is a great idea but here are a few others with free patterns and instructions.
http://www.intarsia.net/ check out the e-bear with pattern and detailed step by step.

You can use a basic coloring book picture for a pattern too. Good luck, keep us posted.

Hi King,
one of my first intarsia piece was the dolphins by JGR (Judy Gale Roberts). She describes the technique step by step in her book (Easy to make Intarsia) so that's why I went with this one. Only 12 pieces to cut, very fun to shape!

Jim's toucan and Bruce's teddy bear are also good suggestions!

Pick a subject you like and dive in!

Hi King
The first intarsia I made was at a class given by Garnet Hall. The 3 projects we started with were a goose, a tulip and a whale. These patterns are free if you go to Garnets site. Intarsia by Garnet Hall - SawBird.com. Good luck and lets see yur first attempt.

Dear King,

BEWARE!! Intarsia is an ADDICTION!! Please, please believe me on this.

I am hopelessly HOOKED!!! Jannette dangled that sweeeeeeet little shy frog pattern and LURED me into the challenge. Then the Nuthatch sucked me in. Now Jim has that adorable toucan.........it never, NEVER will let go of you!!!

I recently ordered SEVEN intarsia patterns from Scroller!!!!!!! aaarrrggghhhhhhh (welllll... some were ON SALE, geez)

It's SO much fun to do, soooo frustrating...I love it. LOL

Go for it!

Heh heh heh, very funny, Jim.

I really have had a great time with the intarsia projects and learn a bit more each time. I have the angel ready to put together and I am actually very pleased with how she turned out.

So, tomorrow I glue all those little pieces together, one by one, remembering to do so on top of the pattern (your little magpie feather convinced me to be sure to use the pattern )

Toucan is first up on the new yellow saw! Promise!
