@Sarah - you've been reprieved! It looks like I will finish your magpie after all!

Just had another call from the hospital. My op programmed for this Thursday has just been put back a week. Seems like my latest plastic surgeon ain't feeling well and is off sick for a couple of days. The saga continues...

Talking

Wow Jim,
The shaping and ebonizing looks great. I am glad your surgery has been postponed to give you the time to finish your bird. After all, next week all you will be able to do is hunt and peck with one hand on the keyboard....like a bird....

Magpie metamorphosis - some slightly presumptuous fun!...

In the intarsia chat last week the subject of backshaping came up. At the time I didn't want to spoil the fun by saying that I'd already thought of using this technique to accentuate those long end wing feathers. Steve and Lewis, who bought the subject up, were so enthusiastic on this idea they buried what doubt I had in trying this out- thanks guys for the push!

I applied this technique today on the almost finished upper wing and here's the result

Also just for fun I'm including this shot of the magpie showing the lower wing rough shaped - still some shaping to go -, the body smooth shaped and detailed, and the upper wing practically finished. The composition is lifted a few mms off of the backing fabric due to all the pieces still being fastened to sanding supports/backers

The idea for this shot came from a very famous drawing by M C Escher - one of my favourite illustrators - where he shows a metamorphosis of lizards crawling out of an original drawing, across a table and over objects before morphing back into the drawing - an illustration that has always fascinated me and a great idea for a future project

And like I say, this photo is just for fun....
