Hi Bob - the most simple way is just to draw using pencil and paper, or use a tracing pad if you have a photo to start with. Try rough sketching your idea first Then decide on how to split the design into shapes according to the final colours you want and then use a drafting pen to produce a pattern with fine lines

If you want to use a PC to help you I'd suggest you import a scan or a decent photo of your rough sketch into a vector based illustrating program such as Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator or Xara Xtreme (my personal favourite) and draw over your sketch using the pen tools. If you havent got access to any of these problems and want a free program which is fairly simple to learn but one you can develop later on try Inkscape

Search for tutorials on the net for any of these programs

Hope this gives you some ideas!

Hi Bob,
to make my intarsia patterns I usually start with a picture and I use Pattern Wizard to make the pattern. You can upload the picture in it and "trace" line on top of it to make the pattern. It is a software designed for stain glass pattern maker. You can get a trial version on the web (simply Google Pattern wizard and you should find it easily).
Hope this help
