what would youre one best hint or tip be in cutting sanding or anything else to do with intarsia or scrolling ? mine would be to change blades regulary . i quiet often try to get the last drop out of a blade and end up with burnt edges or uneven work , after all blades arent that expensive and new blades just glide through the wood ,just got to get out of cheapskate mode . look forward to hearing other tips.

I use a cotter pin with psa sandpaper caught between the pins then chucked in a Dremel in the drill press accessory and I lower the Dremel until the cotter pin eye is in the hole in the table.Sorta like a inverted spindle sander.Tony

I made a marking gauge for rough sanding to a certain thicikness. I took two pieces of 1/4" baltic birch, one long and one short and glued the surfaces together. When I want to mark a background piece to 1/4" I use the lower step and mark the edge. The top step is 1/2". Most wooden pencils are about 1/4" in diameter so if I want 3/8" or 5/8" I lay the pencil on it's side and mark around the piece that way. A couple of used dental tooth cleaning tools and handy for moving small pieces around when checking for fit. Just a the dental tech for some old ones when you have your teeth cleaned. They usually have some around. |

Hi, I found somewhere online a hint for sanding in between small areas. You take a piece of sandpaper and put it in your scroll saw and attach it like it was a blade, clamp it in top and bottom. Than you can use the power of the saw to sand between small areas. It works great. That is what my broken scroll saw is being used for. Jackie |

The intarsia tip I am happiest with is - taking two adjacent cut pieces, holding them firmly together, running the scroll saw blade between them to get rid of any gaps created by uneven cutting.

The one tip I guess would be to relax, scrolling is supposed to be fun!

I had a problem today and figured out a solution and figured I would share it. I edge glue all my projects and I never use wood glue because it will never come apart, if I made a mistake. Well today proved me right. I use tacky glue that I buy at walmart. Dries clear and holds great. Well I edge glued my project and after it dried, I found out I put a piece in wrong. I tried to pry it apart from the back with a screwdriver and that was not working. THen I took it out to the scroll saw and sawed where the glue was and sawed an entire sectoin apart, and then used the dremel rotary sander and sanded whatever glue was left. I was shocked, none of the paint or stain was disturbed, nor the shaping and I took it back inside and reglued it the right way. Hope this helps someone. Jackie |
