As I see the suggested woods for some patterns, I don't see redwood being called out. Is there a reason? Is it similar to cedar? Have a good one Pat Carroll |

I have used redwood. It is a little harder than WRC. But it maybe difficult to get in smaller sizes. I bought it in 2" x 12" and cut it down. You may be able to get in smaller sizes, I don't know.

Maybe it has to do with availability. I don't see it at any of my sources locally or even online.

I've rarely used redwood because it simply isn't available locally. However, a friend did give me some scrap redwood and I used it to make a JGR rose, which came out very nicely. (I gifted the rose to the friend's wife, so I don't have a picture.) It was very soft and rather brittle, so similar to WRC in that sense. It has a surprisingly pretty, quite detailed grain, but not a strong grain. The colour, with finish applied, was a dull, dark red and quite pretty. If you have redwood handy, by all means use it. Any wood will work for intarsia if its colour and grain are what the pattern needs. Lou

I live in southern california, so it definitely is available in all thicknesses. There seems to be a lot of contrasting colors and grain patterns,so I need to do some experimenting. Surprising , I don't see much cedar, out here, or I'm not looking in the right places. Thanks for the replies. pat carroll |

I got some redwood when they remodeled our church. I used some, but it is very soft, has very very fine sawdust, and breaks easily. But I agree - it's a pretty wood.

As Theresa said, it is very soft and breaks easily - as does cedar. It is beautiful and I have used it on occassion when the color was right.

You don't see redwood that much in the stores, or at least I haven't. What I have was gotten "dumpster diving", and was small pieces and strips. Perfect size for the "Dogwood Cross" I made. Like others have said, brittle, and dusty when cutting, but a pretty wood. Fran |

Harlan Many years ago, I uesd to go to Ganahls and check out the remnant boxes, what a great choice of woods they had at that time. Do they still have the remnant boxes? I'm close to temecula now, and hanks lumber is where I do my browsing, trying to get him to get a remnant box, he's thinking about it. I appreciate the responses. pat carroll |
