ok so this is my third intarsia project,Im still trying to get the hang of shaping and all that, so I just used poplar for the wood and painted over it. I love this intarsia stuff LOL!

Now I know I'm going to catch heck from somebody for this, but I love the painted look, even though I know the "painting" is supposed to be done with wood.
Very nice job!

Hi Lee - you did good! and whilst some may adopt a 'natural wood only' approach to intarsia this is by no means a binding rule. For many people either due to unavailability and/or cost of exotic woods or just natural inclination, then paints, stains, burning techniques and even inclusion of non wood materials all are acceptable to obtain a finished piece. Go for it - many scrollers on this board will tell you that the end justifies the means!

Hi Lee, your doggies look terrific! Glad you enjoy intarsia/segmentation... very easy to become addicted to it!

Lee
The PUPS look wonderful---painted or not--good job. There are lots of positive people on this site as I am finding out myself. Henriette is right----it can become addictive---down right intoxicating!

Lee

They look great!

I was a little surprised when I read your post because I'm now working on that pattern myself. Since this is my 2nd project (did the Toucan challenge), I thought it would be good to practice the shaping/sanding. And I also cut mine out of poplar, except for the base which I cut out of walnut for contrast. Haven't decided yet how I'm going to finish mine. Was thinking of some watered down paint or stain. Have to get all the shaping done first. And I have to cut one new piece because for some reason one of the pups chins disappeared on me. Don't you hate it when that happens?

And I definitely agree with you that I'm really liking the intarsia (and segmentation).

Lee,
I love the pups. I haven't seen that pattern before. Where did you get it? I love the painted look too. I have been adding color to most of my projects too. I think that gives it a little extra zip. You did a great job on your first project. It really is addicting. I have only been doing it for 3 years and my husband is crying wolf now. He says I have enough on my walls and enough is enough. I said too bad....LOL.... I know how to patch drywall so he has nothing to complain about anyway. LOL.

Hi Kathy - get used to that problem! - all good scrollers have a small black hole hiding in their workshops which swallow small pieces up!!
