Default Hardwood Blue Heron

Well this is something I don't do often but I had some grey looking spalted hackberry and it seemed like the perfect wood for this project so I used it. I usually use WRC but must admit that it wasn't all that bad using the harder wood.

I'm glad you had a good experience with a new wood. How about a pic for the rest of us to drool over?

Thanks for adding the pic. It is stunning. Perhaps you have found a new favorite wood. The character of the spalted hackberry is amazing.

Another great piece Pete. It is fun using a different wood than you're use to occasionally, isn't it!

Hi Pete,

That is beautiful, I love the colors. The grey is perfect. I bought some grey maple from Jeffries and have a Chickadee not quite finished. I should have bought the other board also.

Great job Pete. The spalted hackberry sure does make the project stand out.

That came out great! I got a couple pieces of hackberry on e-bay awhile ago and I really like using it. It's harder than the blue pine but not too hard to cut and works great when you're looking for something a little different. Western red cedar is ok - but why not use more colors if you can get them. Your heron came out really nice. I've made quite a few of those as they tend to be really good sellers.

Thanks evryone for the comments.Denny they have blue pine at Jefferies! Thats great so I take a look at some when I go down there in a couple of weeks. Janette, Using the different colored woods is OK but I like the challenge of trying to paint the picture with different shades of cedar. Learning to look at the wood and grain direction is what I am continuing to learn with Judy's help. I just feel it makes the picture more realistic. Its not that the different colored woods are bad and there are times to try it for a change or in very distinct circumstances.
