Just managed to finish yet another JGR project. This is I think the first time I have tried a scenery type intarsia. It went OK until I had to draw in the railings at the end and I guess I am not steady enough with the Sharpie in my hand. But I am not going to try to change it now. Enjoy. Ned

Ned: Good job on the lighthouse. I find when doing scenery if there are various depths of it you need to predetermine the depth of each level (like lighthouse is higher than the sky and the houses are higher than the lighhouse etc. I usually give 1/8 inch for each depth. I enjoy this part of intarsia. My wife has helped me on most of my work. She calls herself my perspective person. She defines the height and I do the final cutting / sanding. Hang it with pride. Cheers Bob

Hi Ned, Great looking lighthouse. I have not tried scenery yet, I hope to soon. Drawing the railings with a Sharpie, I can't imagine. |

I'm always curious why we need to point out what we perceive to be our mistakes. Mistakes are only visible to you until you point it out to someone else. Had you not mentioned the mistake with the railings, nobody would look at that intarsia and say " Oh what a mess he made of the railings." Now that you've mentioned the railings that is the first thing people are looking at. I personally think the railings look fine, and if you're proud enough of a project to post it for the world to see, then you shouldn't be pointing out what you perceive to be something wrong with it. It's a very nice project BTW. Marsha

I guess that's just human nature, Marsha, like it or not! I think the trick is to always strive to improve, but to accept our human limitations. I think Ned has a pretty good handle on that, but I have seen folks who give up when what they do isn't perfect in their eyes and that is something that does bother me a good deal. I too have been chided for pointing out defects in my work (Hiya, Dragyn!) and it's a valid point. But I'm not too comfortable praising my own work to the skies! I like to let other people do that for me! And I think most of us are like that. Also, pointing out defects in our work (that others might not notice) can help newer people to see that the work of those of us who've been at it for awhile isn't perfect, but that we accept it and we keep on trucking.Anyway, Ned, as I sure hope you know, you've made a very beautiful piece. You have a steadier hand than I have by far! I could never, ever have done that with a marker. I tend to avoid pieces that require that kind of work. So well done indeed! Lou

Ned, The lighthouse looks great. The detail in the close-up image is excellent. I bet it looks stunning about 3-6 feet away. BTW, I like the scenes-type intarsia the best. pcguy |
