Default New Custom kitty - Baggy - in progress

Hi all,
If you're interested, I thought I'd share my "in progress" pictures with you of the custom kitty I just started working on. I have lots of photos of him and of course the one the customer picked isn't very good quality (very dark) - so I'm referring to many as I go. Hope you enjoy the progress!

This picture shows his coloring better. This picture is still a bit darker on the monitor.

Janette,

What a great start...looks wonderful already.

Just wondering...Did you collect all of the wood to do this project, or do you have a ton of wood to choose from in your shop?

Id say that is not a very good photo to go by for sure. With your talent though, I know it will turn out great, as your start looks very nice.Is the pattern you have the pieces layin on a penciled drawing, or how do you come from the photo to that drawing, I assume its different than the portrait pattern techniques people use?

Nice, I am looking forward to seeing you take that lousy picture and turn it into a fine piece. You are are so good, keep up the progress pictures so we can all learn something.

Janette
Although I'm not mad keen on cats (sorry!), I do find this really interesting. I have not done much intarsia because I am justt building up my stock of exotic woods. Your showing this does help with technique, though. Thanks for sharing!

Looks great so far!

I'm trying to picture ahead where you're going with this and am looking forward to seeing what you actually do. It'll be a good learning exercise to see how my guesses diverge from your reality. Thanks for posting the work in progress.

Thanks everyone! As far as the woods - I currently have a stash of blue pine that I've been using. It comes in so many variations- it's working out well - and since some of the pieces are small, I'm using up some of that "can't bear to toss" pieces! It was delayed because of lack of woods. This order came in probably over a year ago - but that's the wait I'm telling people so no surprise there. Guess this kitty has been gone awhile and the photo isn't the greatest because it's a scanned copy of an old photo- with all the stripes- I'm going for a general "look" rather than exact match (who me !!)

As far as the pattern itself ...I pencil draw from the photo then scan into my computer. I use pattern wizzard to recreate the pattern and give me smooth lines that I can print as hairlines. I print one master copy of the pattern then as I need areas for "cut and paste" print just that area. I also take the pattern and put it into another program to color it- which gives me an idea of what woods and especially for something like this where there are many shades of one color - it helps to differentiate for wood selection. Here is the colored pattern I made for reference. It helps quite a bit.
