Rolf
Excellent piece! I like the shape you have achieved and the position. It seems to have life!

Oh yeah, that is coming along fine. Guess I need to get my ballon project in gear again...

Keep on posting, I love watching a plan come together in pictures.

Don't know if I'm coming in late on this, or if it makes sense.
Your heron looks wonderful. But when I look at it, my perspective is thrown out of whack. The face, body and left leg appear to be facing profile, even slightly away. The right leg appears to be facing much more toward the viewer. Kind of like standing one direction, but turning your foot 90 degrees away from you.

Could this be solved by raising the right leg slightly and having the middle claw of the right leg shaped to be wrapping over the top of the branch giving the appearance of grasping?

Please excuse the poor quality illustration, but it does give the idea of what I'm talking about. The left shows the current design, the right shows my idea.

Kevin,
I am still not happy with the legs, He is standing on one legg.
I like it better than the original design. I like your suggestion and may play with that mod if I have time. It is a BD present for my wife and I am running out of time.

It's coming along great Rolf. Shaping is very nice. I actually have a finished piece of that heron made by Scott Geilish. His is done in all cedar.

Good luck with the feet.

Getting closer.
I did the off lighting so that it is easier to see the shapeing.
I still need to put on my finish and glue it to the backer that I still need to cut.
My wife suggested a couple more feathers on the head so I did, and I like it.

It looks pretty awesome Rolf. If it's not glued together yet, think about something with me. I know it's what in the pattern, but what jumped at me right away is the feather piece on top of the body. All feather up cuts are the same, but that one is off to the sides and at an angle that is almost up. Doesn't work for me. Take a pencil and draw 3 or four lines from bottom that arch towards neck, similar to like all the other feathers. Put your finger over the cuts you already did and have your wife and you look at that. If it's a definite no, then stay with what you have. If it's a ho hum, cut a new piece, then swap between the two and make a decision. I can easily see that piece and the one below it are from the same cut on a board, as the grain flows perfect between the two. That is not a bad thing, but a new piece with similar grain direction won't blend quite as much as the grain lines will be different. I only say that as it will also figure into your decision if you decide to try a substitute piece. I like your foot changes better over the original as well, and the stick is perfect. It's going to be a killer piece regardless what you do of course. You not only have the skill, but you have the necessary patience to take your time rather than rush it through.
