The project of recreating the Davinci horse has finally come to an end and I am very proud of the results. This project forced me to extend my skills into new territory from converting a photo into a workable pattern, learning new shaping and contouring techniques and use of new tools.
Wood: Mahogany, Wenge (mane, tail and eyes), Aspen (forehead), ironwood (hooves) Hickory (base). 18" long by 17" high. There ae 26 individual pieces in all (not counting the spacers for widening the body and neck). My original prototype had about 100 pieces. At Jeff's suggestion I used fewer pieces and added more carving technique to my shaping process.
This project has been 8 weeks in the making, starting with the research of the photos to the making of the patterns and the proto types to putting the final touches yesterday.
The term "Intarsia in the round" comes from learning about carving in the carving forum. JGR terms her intarsia as dimensional intarsia or bas relief. In the carving community they distinguish full 360 sculpting as "carving or sculpting in the round" to distinguish it from carving in relief.
What distinguishes Intarsia from carving in relief is the use of grain direction, wood shades and different color woods to obtain the desired effect. As someone aptly termed it as

ainting with wood".
I consider my work as intarsia because I employ different colors and shades of wood to obtain the desired result. The end result is really two intarsia patterns conjoined to form one end result
I have included views of the right side and the left side before.
For this reason I call it Intarsia in the Round.
