| I trace all mine by hand. I find it easier to see the alterations I want to make on paper than on screen. Of course, no pattern is ever a be all and end all, as a good artist looks at the wood and makes changes to fit the material at hand. I will admit that I do work in an easier medium to make such changes with, but that only makes shifting the pattern as you draw it that much more important. Someday I'll find a way to scan my patterns and autotrace the line into a vector, but for now keeping patterns on paper works for me.

| I also draw my clock pattens by hand then scan them into the PC and clean them up with Microsoft Paint. I use Coyote for pictures.

Actually I use iPhoto to alter the photo to enhance the shadows and accentuate the lines. By changing exposure I can get a photo which is then easy to trace. I use transparent paper and fine line pencil to trace the lines to make the pattern.
It seems complicated but really is easy. I suggest that you take a photo in iPhoto, put it in the edit mode.
Use the effects mode to change the photo to B&W or whatever monotone you wish.
Go to the Adjust screen. You can than play with the various adjustments (contrast, exposure, sharpness etc) until you get a photo which is easy to trace.
Below is the sequence from original photo to finished project.

I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't have that operating system, and few lack the required hardware and software to create patterns. I can say that anyone here looking at designing patterns does not fall into that small category. [rolling on floor laughing]
Ah, ok, back at the keyboard (I think). As for copying into the computer, I haven't yet come up with a decent tracer for any OS. If you come up with anything, I would like to know.
