| Intarsia 360 This is my first post to this forum. I have been working on Intarsia for several years now. What has always intrigued me about his form of wood working is the variety of wood colors and the idea of painting a picture with wood.
Over the years I have also become captivated by the 3 dimensional aspect of Intarsia through shaping, raising and lowering different components of the picture. This seemed to make the projects almost come alive.
However it always seemed to me that we could do more and there seemed to something missing. I have been wanting to try my hand a making a full dimensional piece that could be seen from all sides. On another forum someone post a full dimensional fish and this prompted me to experiment.
I experimented using Kathy Wise's rearing stallion. The photos below are the result. Since Intarsia as done presently is already in 3D an poster on another forum suggested that I call my piece Intarsia 360 since it can be viewed from all angles.
It is not exactly sculpting and not exactly intarsia- it is really a hybrid of both.
Tell me what you think - is it sculpting is it intarsia?

| I'm not sure how I would classify that, but I can tell you it's amazing!! I've never seen anything done quite like that on a scroll saw.

| I have done quite a few fish in Intarsia. My other hobby is kayak fishing (mostly saltwater).

| To me, this is more like carving and sculpture, than intarsia, but very nice work. As I see it, it's not really intarsia because very few intarsia patterns could be done in this style, take a house for example, or a landscape, etc. For animals, birds, fish etc. it works well, which is why those are such popular carving subjects. Again, beautiful work, but IMHO, not really intarsia even though an intarsia pattern is being used. Thanks for posting the pics for us to see.

| Right. It's beautiful, skilled and anything else you can say, but it's not intarsia. It is carving. The idea of replacing wood with another wood for different color is not new. Done with a scroll saw, band saw or carving tool, still is a carved statue. I have seen this done many times. Don't take any of what I say as negative either, because it's truly awesome work, and you are very talented. It's just not "intarsia".
