Basically, intarsia is made from individual pieces of wood- different colors where you focus on choosing a color of wood that best suits what you want it to represent. Each piece is cut oriented so the grain of the wood goes different directions depending on the look you want. Segmentation is generally cutting an entire pattern from a single piece of wood all at the same time. Some paint or stain the pieces to achieve the colors they want.

That's the very basic difference. Both are shaped the same and you can interchange patterns.

I got Judy Gayle Roberts book "Easy to Make Intarsia"
It's very detailed and leads you step by step through 2 projects-plus has other patterns.
You may also want to check out Bruce's "e-book" at www.intarsia.net , it's free and you get a pattern of a teddy bear to do.

Talk about wood availability: I live in the Yuma, Az. area & it is almost imposible to find wood for intarsia, or anything else. The only wood I have found, is some Mahogony, Poplar, Oak, & some Maple if I'm lucky. The lumber yards here only supply lumber for contractors. That leaves Home Depot & Lowes to pick from. Ha You have to really look to find good pieces. If I need anything in exotic's, I have to order it. That's not often.

You can easily get some good stuff from specialized woodworker stores in Tucson and Phoenix, time for a road trip.

I find the folks at D & D great to work with. Also, although their selection isn't as great, Sloan's are really good. I've never had a problem with either one.

D & D also have a great wood ID kit.

Hey Stinkfoott: All the information you have received is good. It is also worth noting that Judy Gale Roberts and her husband Jerry use mostly western red cedar. WRC as you will frequently see it referred to, comes in a huge range of shades. Don't forget to look at cedar fence boards, as well as the dimensioned lumber.
Best regards, Walt Rollison/Litlhof.

You could have a look at Kathy Wise' site, she has some really nice kits, with the wood included.

It's also work keeping an eye on ebay - there's a few people selling batches of mixed wood scraps that could be useful for you "intarsians". Such as these ones at the moment : http://cgi.ebay.com/35-Pc-16-Specie-...QQcmdZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.com/30-Small-Thin-Wo...QQcmdZViewItem

I've bought pen blanks from both of these sellers in the past and have had good service from both.

Try doing an ebay search on "intarsia lumber" ...

Hope this helps ..
