I made a nut and a bridge for my guitar from deer antler. I found it to be rather porous and thin walled to work with, but I liked the results and it was worth the effort. A carver friend told me there's a difference in density between the various species, and between the different parts of the antlers. Good luck with your project!

I remember the stench from using my dremel on deer antler....does that help? It is rather soft and easy to work with.

i do a lot with antler, its easy to carve, and the smell reminds you of the smell you get when a dentist is drilling your teeth, but easy to get over, depending on the part you are working with some parts are very porous, i found some of the larger antler hard to do anything with the insides , one thing i found that works is if you are cutting slabs or button like pieces is to soak them in polymer it strengthens the porous part up considerably the parts closest to the tip of the antler are less porous and easy to work with

Rob, I was wondering what you were going to do with it. I have done a little work with Deer & Moose antlers, but, not to any extent. The Moose antler, I cut a little with the saw, but, most of it with dremel tool. The deer antlers, I just drilled & scrim-shawed a little bit. Not much help here, so I wish you good luck with whatever you do with them.

I ran into a NA artist (Cherokee) and we are exploring ways to blend our talents and work.
He is a master knapper and worl with flint, stone, glass etc. The pic attached are point he chipped in a few minutes while we were talking yesterday. The antler will be used for stone knives, other weapons, tools and art. We are also looking for sources for antler and flint. If you can use custom pieces for your own projects we will soon be able to take orders.
As this develops I'll keep you posted.
