Default Just a thought about biscuits...

We are discussing the new puzzle "giraffe trio" in another thread and the center piece appears to be pretty fragile. After cutting it in a piece of pine I agree it does appear fragile and was wondering do you think you could insert a biscuit in that area and make it more stable?

It would have to be done prior to cutting due to the swerve of the backside of mommy giraffe and I'm not to sure it would reach past their hinies. I would of course have to paint the edges to hide the biscuit after it is cut out.

Something to think about for other projects that may have a fragile part near the edge. I would think a biscuit would stabilize and add strength to any wood.

I suppose a biscuit could be placed once cutting had begun if you could get access with the jointer (biscuit that is) to insert the slot.

Sorry bout the rambling...I'm gonna lay out some and see if they will reach.

I went out and drew a straight line on my extra pattern just above pappas backside & top of his tail and up to just above the interlocking cut on his neck. A #20 biscuit does span the area.

As an update. I made the cut ( the straight one so the biscuit joiner would be stable and reach).

The #20 biscuit does span far enough however until the glue dries I'm not sure how deep it went. I'll let you know when I can go back out and do some more cutting. This is my 3rd trio....LOL

Before I forget....I used 7mm googly eyes for mama and papa giraffe. A 9/32 drill bit is almost the perfect size for the 7mm eyes, it allows the eye to slide in with just a small amount of pressure.
Eureka! Something went right.

Where is that camera??????

Oh Sue, Honey where did you put the camera?

Sue---?
Sue----?

Where did I leave Sue?

Here are some pics...I found the camera...I still can't find Sue.....Oh well, one thing at a time.
First one is showing where I cut the straight line and inserted the biscuit.

2nd one is showing a black dotted line which shows how deeply the biscuit will go. The biscuit is as far toward the head as my jointer could squeeze in.

Ok - I don't understand. If the biscuit is there, why. To make that little area stronger? Do you still cut along the papa's back? Is it still a puzzle? I love the idea of googy eyes. I may have to cut these cuties.

Sally, I was just hoping to make that particular area stronger with the biscuit.
Yep, it will still be a puzzle once I finish cutting it out. I will still cut along the papas back but I had to make a straight area so the biscuit joiner would be stable and reach as far as possible into the area I wanted to reinforce.
had I been using maple or another hard wood it probably would ot have concerned me.

By looking close at the pattern, I would assume the weak point on that piece is in beyond where your biscuit reaches.I am thinking at the front of that giraffes nose would be more of a weak point ? When I cut that out, it didnt really seem to weak, but I was using maple too.

Mike, biscuits also come in the smaller #10 and # 0 sizes and I have a Riobi detail biscuit joiner that uses R1, R2 and R3 biscuits which range in size from 5/8 to 1 inch long.

Thanks, Mike. I understand now. You must be able to see the biscuit along the side. I guess that's no big deal. It's such a cute pattern, I'm trying to think of someone with small children I could cut it for.

Another thought would be to use two pieces of thin wood and glue them with the grain 90 degrees to each other. Where one is weak, the other would be strong.
