G'day all, Another idea that you may find useful. I often find myself having to drill a hole into the end of a dowel. I knocked this jig up, quick and dirty, about 12 months ago and like most things I do, if it does the job that the way it stays. I had to drill a 1/4" hole into the top of a 1/2" dowel to use as stacks for some trucks. I drilled 1/2" holes in a bit of 30mm thick timber and then split the timber on the band saw down as far as the hole furthest from the end. Place the dowels in the holes, making sure that they are flush with the bottom of the jig. Whack on a clamp to apply pressure and grip the dowels. Drill into the ends. My original thought was to put a couple of 3/8 bolts through the edge of the timber with wing nuts so as to enable it to be a self contained jig, but this works. LOL

Hey John, down and dirty is the country/hill country way, when you start to make it pretty, you are just throwing away at that point. LOL Our slang words may be a tad different, but I think we are saying the same thing. LOL

That's a good idea John. Sometimes I have the need to do just the same thing. I'll keep your idea in mind.

How do you make sure the hole is centered on the dowel? A compulsive person asks (me)

G'day Rolf, Now this is one of those, where you're going to say "damn, I knew that!!!!" I eyeball them with this jig. ![]() Occasionally, I'll get one so far off, it's noticeable and have to chuck it, but you get two bites at the cherry, cause I can always end for end the dowel and have another shot. Now if it is imperative that the hole be centred, this is what I do. Clamp a sacrificial table on the drill press, drill a 1/2" hole part way through into this. Put one dowel at a time in the jig and have it protrude about 1/8" out the bottom. Now after it's clamped in place just locate the protruding 1/8" into the table and after changing drill bits away you go. According to Hoyle, you should be spot on. Tony. I burnt a few fingers, then wrecked a few pieces(using Pliers) before the penny dropped mate ![]() Thanks all, and I'm very happy that it was of some use.
