Question pattern size help

I think I had another brain fart. I'm doing one of JZ's patterns that is 8x10 inches. I cut my wood 8x10 and cut it out twice. It has a section that falls out because there is no wood to support it. Should I be leaving extra wood around the patterns. I think I should one for support and another if I decide to mat and frame it. Otherwise it just won't work in the long run right? About 2 inches all the way around sound Right? That would put an 8x10 into a 10x12 frame. Opinions please........

Scott,
Not being familiar with the particular pattern you're doing I can only offer general information. I know with my own patterns when it's designed to be cut at 8 X 10 that's exactly what it means. I size the pattern such that there's a minimum of a 1/2" border around the outside (i.e. the actual pattern is 7" X 9"). Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Try cutting the wood to 8 1/2" x 11" then center your pattern on that see if that helps.Jerry

Another option is to shink your plan a bit. I scan the design into my computer using Paperport program. On my printer (Cannon IP3300) I can go to the print functions and resize down to 1% and up to 400%. Most office supply stores that do printing charge a few cents to copy a plan. If it is from a magazine like Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts it is in the editorial section,it says that you can have 10 copies made for Personal use. The store can also change the size for no extra cost.
