Holiday Stuff

Hi Everyone,

I have updated my picturetrail site http://www.picturetrail.com/jwdukes with a few small things I did for Christmas. They are under the Holiday section. The thought hit me (a little to late to do much) to make carved Christmas Cards. I didn't get many done, next year I will have to start in Oct. to get as many finished as I would like. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

They were pretty simple to make, but the background took a lot of time. I outlined the pattern with a V-tool and used a Dremal with a small ball to make the textured background. It's just a whole bunch of overlapping dots. I then went over it with a light wash of dark stain (about 50-50 water to stain)to make the worked areas darker and wiped the stain off of the flat areas. I then coated the entire thing with tung oil. It takes a little practice to give the texture a random look. They were a big hit with the people I gave them to. I may try to do a collectable series of them for next year.

Thanks Jerry, it's really something to try in the future...about what size are they really a Christmas card size?

They average around 6" x 7". About the size of a large card. I used 1/2" wood this time because it's what I had on hand, but the next ones will be 1/4" or thinner. Since the texture is not very deep even thinner wood would be good.

Great job Jerry. I had suggested carved cards to my wife but she didn't like the idea, maybe after seeing yours she might change her mind.

Unique idea and very well done. I would imagine the only draw back would be the postage.

Fantastic idea, and fantastic work...What a great novel idea. I really like the background texture as well. Was going to ask how you did that, then I read a little further and see you answered that. Thanks for sharing, looks like you got a lot of brains turning. Smell of sawdust everywhere!!
