I have noticed some carvings where the hands are carved seprately, is there a rule of thumb in determining how big to make the hands? :

If you are making a realistic carving (cause in caricature it won't matter what size) the hands are usually the distance of chin to middle of forehead. Check out your own, place the heal of your hand on your chin, do your fingertips come to about the middle of your forehead? Another interesting comparison...how big are your feet compared to your head? You might be surprised how big they really are! Callynne

You might check out the post about 'measuring' by Rick-n-Seattle ..in/on the Character Carving forum. You will find some reference to 'hands' there.

A friend, Jesse Kuhs, once looked at one of my Santas, sadly shook his head and said 'Nancy, Nancy, remember......your thumb HAS to fit in your nose.' : |

That's what you get for making his nose too small!

Callynne: I tried that, and my forehead nearly reaches to my shirt collar. Do I make the hands larger, or just measure where it used to be? ![]() Ken in So Cal |
