Hello. I am new to the board and wanted to say Hi. I am a new carver. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where they find holiday patterns that aren't santas! I love santa, but right now I'd love to carve a witch or pumpkin figure such as the ones displayed in the 'carvers-r-us' picturetrail gallery. Thank you!

If you'd like I'll send you the pattern I have made for *'Witch Hazel' *All I have is a top and side view, and a sketch of the broom. *As far as the pumpkin goes, I don't have a pattern....just carved that out of a block so it looked like a pumpkin. *Even before starting to carve the pumpkin, I went in through the bottom with a 1/34' Forstner bit to begin hollowing it out. *

and Holly, I forgot to say - WELCOME to the board. We're glad to have you with us. You've found a great place to learn and have fun.
If you're just beginning, think about carving a snowman. That's a nice, simple pattern - not too complicated but you'll learn a lot about grain direction, rounding stuff out., etc.

To echo Nancy's post, a snowman would be any easy project. As a sneak preview, we have a snowman carving project in the upcoming issue of Wood Carving Illustrated, which hits the newstands on Nov. 16--just in time for the holidays!.

Welcome to our favorite carving-talkin' place. You'll find so much info and entertainment here. It's a great bunch of people who are sooooo willing to help anyone who might have a question or carving delimma.

I agree about the snoman--I have some of those to tide me over the entire winter--before and after Christmas AND WITH Christmas.

There is a carving book that features several seasonal carvings. I'll search through my stack, files, and references and see if I can come up with it this weekend and I'll let you know the name.

I have a leprechan for March, Rabbits for Easter, ghosts for halloween, scarecrow for fall, Uncle Sam for July, pilgrims for Thanksgiving. Have never come up with something for Valentines Day except for the 3' heart with an arrow through it, but I'm still looking. Maybe these will give you some ideas.
