Default Update on Coin cutting

I know we talked about this in here somewhere and this is what I found out. We were watching one of the educational shows on TV and it was about the US Mint. They said and I quote (almost) "The coin is yours, you own it and as long as you don't try to defraud anyone, you can do with it what you, even making jewelry out it." So is anyone making jewelry out of the quarters?

Betty

They're right. Coins are, for some reason I don't understand, thought of differently by the Government than paper money. You can do pretty much anything you want to a coin (like running a penny through one of those machines that turns it into a souvenir), but you can't deface paper money.

I, however, am too cheap to turn a quarter into jewelry. That's a quarter I could be spending on wood or a new tool!

Ah but if you could sell that jewellery made from a quarter for $20 - think how much more wood you could buy ...

Ive thought about trying the coin cutting, but theres something about the filings and sawdust from cutting metals on my scrollsaw that scared me. I think the moving parts would find the dust very abrasive, and could wear out a saw fast. Dale

I have seen this company's work up close and personal, and it is impressive.

Get a good mask and have at it!

Default Looking for Source for Mounting Cut Coins

I have been looking for some time for a source for mounting a coin after it is cut. I am most interested in a silver colored piece (finding) for mounting a quarter. But, I am also looking for mountings (findings) for other coins. The piece would probably have a way to connect a chain for a necklace or a key chain.

Do you know of a source?

Thanks,

Clem

Clem,

Go to a jewelry store and ask them if they could help you or refer you to a supplier.

Or look up the net for jewelry supplies. That would be your best bet to find a source.

Regards,
Marcel

Marcel,

Thanks for the reply.

I have done an internet search 3 or 4 times in the last year for these things with no success. I have also been to my local Hobby Lobby with no success. I'm sure there is a source somewhere. I'll give a jeweler a try, maybe they can point me in the right direction. I need to pick up some silver solder and they might sell me a small piece.

Clem
