My Red Oak Tree - Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts Message Board

Last year Dale sent me one of his incredible christmas decorations sanwiched between 2 layers of Red Oak. I kept these pieces until I found something I really wanted to cut. Well when I received the pattern of a tree I thought that was just perfect! So I laminated the pieces together and here it is. I used a #1 spiral to cut the tree (first real try with a spiral - not the new type either) and a polar #3 to cut the rest. Now I have my very own Red Oak tree from America! Thanks Dale!! Hope I done justice to your wood!

A wonderful job Teresa.

This leads me to an idea.
Wouldn't it be awesome for us to send samples of wood from our own countries to scrolling friends around the world.
Almost like a pattern exchange.
They could be cut the same dimensions as our quilt blocks.
The wood could be identified with the species, the name of the contributor and the place it came from.
As recipients we could make our own quilt or even a scrapbook of woods.

I am not sure how this would work out and we need to finish the quilt first, but it is food for thought.

Good idea Carl,

I want figured Australian Cedar, like Tony Ward uses for his boxes.

I want to make a mini-clock for my office with it. Maybe a Dragon, but I'll let the wood tell me what it wants to be.

I have a good source of western red cedar and I am not sure if it is yellow cedar or Spruce. but good softwood

Not enough to start an international incident though!

A good idea so long as one takes care of how they fill in the customs label. If wood was written on it it sure as heck runs the risk of confiscation here. Maybe put a photo between boards and just label it photograph!

I like the idea of it being a five inch square - I could have a several trees like my red oak one. But then I now have another couple of ideas which I'll keep to myself at this stage.

WOW!! That looks beautiful. I am so glad you posted that! It looks sooo neat! What I didnt notice is that you didnt say the size of that little piece of red oak! It is much smaller then it appears in that picture! I cant remember how big it was, but I dont recall it being any bigger then a 4 inch square! I would say you done great, you are a master! It was my pleasure sharing with you, I would do it anytime! Dale

Yes, Dale it is hard to tell just how big the piece of work is by a picture. Dale your pieces were 4" by 5". The Tree frame ended up 4 3/4" square. Thanks for the comments!
