Default Fretwork Fantasy Butterfly

Hi Bob,

I got a good laugh out of the project you are working on.... I didn't know the pattern was available yet!

Here is something that is just been completed, but will be modified some - the fretwork version of the Fantasy Butterfly (some might recognize it from the segmented version in the latest issue of SSW)

Toni,
MS sent it to me early so I could cut it for my wife's birthday (Sept. 13) but I screwed up my first version (I cut it with a #7 blade after reducing the pattern slightly) and couldn't get it together...so I started the segmentation over. Segmentation is a little tougher than I imagined <grin>.

Nice job on the butterfly!

I've got a few patterns here in the office I'm thinking about starting...some of John Nelson's restored patterns...a cut here, and a cut there. Plus I'm taking over getting our shop here at the office into shape...

Hi Carl,

Could you elaborate about these two intriquing projects?

Thanks,

I usually don't have in-progress pictures due to the fact that when I go down to my workshop, I typically stay until whatever it is I'm working on is finished.

If I did that I would never see the light of day again. I must say that is conviction or commitment or both.

You've got a lot more patience than I do John...I can't even sit at my desk for more than 2 hours without a break!

Hey Bob that wasn't me that said that. I am with you. I quoted Kevin but did not use the quote button. He has to have some patience. Whenever I am in the shop I am always working on more than one project. Never can I go and just do one thing. I do not know what it is but this is the reason I have so many unfinished projects laying around. You asked for photos of unfinished projects well I can fill a few pages here for sure. I have projects I started 3 years ago but never finished. Some just require a coat of oil but that just is me. To top things off I am going to be starting on a redo of my kitchen this winter. I was to make the cabinets but decided against that. Enough rambling here I have to go watch my Yankees kick some butt ( I HOPE ).

Default pic of the sundial for Clem

The pocket sundial is still a prototype.
When I made the design I didn't take into account the thickness of the wood I was using the tab on the bottom of the dial isn't long enough to set the dial at the correct latitude.
The dial is sandwiched between two thinner pieces of BBP and slides out to open up. The gnomon is a bamboo skewer that is stored in a groove cut in the inner piece of ply.

The scrollers aid is made on the same principle, a thin drawer between two pieces of ply. The outer ply has a protractor to check blade angle, there is are three thickness notches cut in it too.
A magnifying glass is inlaid. there is a depth-guage ruler inside and a drawer to store those tiny drill bits that won't fit into the drill index.
The back of the aid has a chart which shows blade size for different thicknesses of wood and a drill chart for the correct blade.
I only have the pattern drawn up for this I haven't had a chance to make one yet.

The last picture is the birth announcement. I like the font I use, I got it as a brass template from a papercraft shop.
The thing I like about the font is there is only one hole drilled for each letter.
