Question ear protection

Ok, I have this problem. I know you have to wear masks so not to breath in the dust that is sooo bad for us all!!!!! but what about ear protection???? Because of certain machines in the shed- mainly being the vacume cleaner used in conjunction with other less noisy elements, combine to be just a loud racket!! What do you guys use, I have tried the disposible ones, they work but can be a bit of a pain. I have thought about the ones that when not in use you hang around your neck but have heard they are uncomfortable.

Theresa this is the one's I use that hang around your neck , and I don't wear them unless I'm using the big woodplaner or edger . And on top of the regular ear plugs I use muffs additional . I use a double respirator all the time I'm doing any scrolling or wood working of any kind , sure gets warm in it so I have a small fan that sets behind me and blows on slow speed to keep me from burning up even in the cold weather , but the shop is heated also ........Marshall

I don't use them and I didn't hear the rest of what you said.

The best ear protection is the one that you will wear!

I use foam earplugs that have a cord, so I can keep them around my neck.

Well I just put a new gas furnace in my house. I kept the squirrel cage fan out of it to make into a dust removal fan/ Then I can get rid of the vacuum cleaner noise. I took me forever to get use to using a dusk mask. But I just cant stand sticking things in my ears, and the mickey mouse ear protection make my ears sweat. ( ewwew) Now all i have to do is get off my butt and get back to the workshop and finish up what I started two months. ago.

theresa, I have the ear muff type but don't wear them while scrolling. My saw doesn't make that much noise. I wear them when using my random orbit sander with the shop vac hooked to it. My ears are 74 years old and I can hear most everything but my wife.

When I remember them I use ear muff type. I try to use them when ever I use the big boy toys..planer, jointer, table saw. Don't need them for the ss.

I bought two pair of shooters muffs, one for the range and one for the shop. My ears do get warm with them. I am looking into getting one of those faceshield air respirator ones that includes ear protection as well.

Hi------two things a scroller should always have----------always use the ear muff type ear protection (the best that you can afford) and respirator mask--------I have them on all the time------with the large ceiling mounted air cleaner on all the time and also my heavy duty vacume on and hooked to the saw-------you might not think it a big deal but over time you will either breath in the deadly dust and have lung problems later and if no ear protection then you will have hearing problems-------so its a small investment to save big problems down the road---------I have my ceiling unit hooked up so that when I switch on the light to the shop it comes on and is always on while I am in there regardless if I am scrolling or just preparing my wood for joining---------while using my heavy duty planer I always have my ear protection on-----------it comes second nature to put on the safety gear--------so in short -----think safety all the time and you will enjoy scrolling for many years to come---------take care and happy scrolling------Tom

Hi Theresa,

As others have said, my scrollsaw isn't very loud but the dust collector is. I have reusable in ear plugs (Heartech SilentEars as reviewed at Heartech Earplugs - Ear Plugs - webBikeWorld ) which I use for any lengthy sessions (and separate pairs which live in the car & motorcycle helmet bag), and a set of earmuffs for quick sessions or if I have guests. The earmuffs are less comfortable, but easier to put on and off quickly. My wife has a Zem headset which she loves (Sensgard | Welcome to the ZemZone)

Most decent plugs come in different sizes. The difference between a pair that fits comfortably and that you will will and between one that wont is much greater than the difference in protection between any two sets of plugs.
