Allthough I have been scrolling for quite a while, my projects have not been original,I have allways used available patterns. Much has been said about members designing their own patterns, something , I have never tried, nor would I have a clue how to do so. Are There any special skills involved? I am not so hot on drawing. Can anyone advise please. Harry UK. (Hegner multicut 2) |

There isn't much skill involved with this age of computers. For starters I'd go get one of the two great programs out there. Gimp and Inkscape (you can find them by searching for them in google and they are free to download), after getting them go here Scroll Saw Design Tutorials - Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts Message Board and look at the tutors there. You can also go to this link www.scrollsawvillage.com and look under the "Village University" thread and Travis has made some video and written tutors on both of these programs dealing with how to make your own patterns. Lastly, you just practice, practice, and even practice some more. With the aid of these tutors and the help you can find here you'll be making your own programs before you know it. Hope this helps.

Sit with a pencil, paper, a few measuring and drafting tools, and a BIG eraser, and just see what you can come up with. Thats the program I use.

Ya Dale started out with a BIG eraser, but you should see the size of it now.

I will have to disagree with Chris. I have had patterns made from photos by some that don't capture the subject very well. Then I have had patterns made that do capture the subject perfectly. I believe it is more of a gift than a skill. I am speaking of capturing live subjects, especially their eyes and facial expressions. Maybe as Chris said it takes a lot of practice. Just my 2¢ worth.
