Depends on the pattern. For really delicate stuff with lots of inside cuts, I like thin baltic birch ply. For most other types of flat ornaments, I like a mixture of hardwoods, cherry, walnut, red oak, sassafrass, maple, etc. If I'm painting the ornament or making compound cut ornaments, I generally use poplar.

Walnut and cherry, 'cause that's what I have on hand most of the time.

I like all the hardwoods white ash made me some nice angels. like cherry, walnut, maple, birch. I just made some with butternut that just look great. Butternut is a bit soft so when I put it in the stack i like to put a good hard wood like maple on top and bottom. Mike

Any thin hardwood that I have resawn from scraps. 1/16 to 1/4 ply if they are very intricate, delicate or are going to be painted. most recently, 1/8 acrylic in various colors. Except for the smell, it cuts beautifully with #2 skip tooth blades even when stacked 4 high. george

Rick, Love the idea of cedar. Do you buy thin stock or saw it yourself? If you are purchasing it, where do you purchase it from. Sounds like just what I was looking for. DG Dewalt 788 |
