If you're having trouble reading the magazine this might help:

I find that by doing this, you are able to develop your own techniques, that are required to finish the project.
After you read the article you might ditch your ideas for the authors, but if you read the "how to" 1st, it tends to lead in that direction with blinkers and shut out alternatives.

Does anybody else do this ??? Maybe we are just strange
Yup what you said John. Strange we might be...........but that's what make the world go round and a little strange never hurt anyone.

I always try to "see" the finished piece in my mind before starting it. Always have done this as far back as I can remember, whether working on the scroll saw or what ever the task at hand is. Having it in my head (and not just on paper) and knowing what I want it to look like as a finished piece while making it, is an inspiration to me. This comes into play when cutting fret work "portrait" type work, I sometimes change the cutting pattern before hand or as I go, to what is, in my opinion, "best" for the piece, especially when the grain of the wood comes into play.

Does this make me strange?

If I like the way a project looks I will read the intro to pick up any cautions or tips and then I will think through how I would make it. If I actually make the project, I will reread the article carefully and check to see if the author ran into the same cutting or assembly problems I thought of. I usually do not have to actually follow the instructions for most projects unless it involves a technique I have not or only rarely used.

I generally scan through the magazine and get an idea of what it contains. I then spend some time looking more closely for the projects that I may attempt to do. Then I search a while for the fox. I then read the instructions to each project that I intend to make. Then I read the other project instructions in order to learn new techniques.

Wait a minute, you're supposed to read the magazine? Man, and here I thought it was all about the pretty pictures!!! I get really discourage with all that black and white stuff that takes up space when they could fit more pretty pictures in there!

Personally I scan the mage first to find the projects I might be interested in. Think about how I would make it and then go back and read how the author/designer thought to do it and mix both ideas usually.
