Hi everyone, I am new to this outstanding hobby, and I think I tried to run befor I could crawl. What I mean by that is I jumped in and started scrolling and got so absorbed in it that I thought I knew everything I would need to know. Can someone please tell me why my pattern paper bunches up around the rim of the hole after I drill for blade insertion. I puchased new drill bits, so I have eliminated that potential problem and I am using a drill press to make the entry holes. Wood working is not foreign to me at all, my wife and I owned & operated a Custom Picture Frame shop for 19 years and I also have a nice wood shop at home. Thank you for any help in advance.

Welcome theframer......the only thing I can think of why your paper bunches up around the hole is you are going down onto the wood too far with your drill. You don't need to touch the wood with the chuck, just enough so the drill goes through the wood a tad. Hope this helps if I understood your question correctly.

Two things possibly, are you putting packing tape on? That may help out to hold down the pattern. Second, tiny bit = high speed. Also as stated above, make sure the chuck is not contacting the wood.

I would try a different glue, it sounds like the glue you use is coming a bit loose and dust is getting into the gap between paper and wood. I also use wide clear tape on patterns with a lot of holes.

Thanks a lot to all you folks. I'm positive that the drill chuck is not hitting the blank, but I'm not sure the glue I use is the best for this purpose. I have been using a spray glue that was moveable, so it probably never did set up, I'm going to try 3M Super 77 on my next glue up, maybe that will solve it. Merry Christmas to all, I hope that doesn't ofend anyone.

3M Super 77 is definately good stuff. I NEVER have pattern movement problems and that is exactly what I use. Tom |

Hi Rick - I was using 3M Spray mount which is a repositionable glue and had a few problems such as you describe -sometimes even when cutting. I've just switched to 3M Super 77 and that gives much better gluing power up to now and no separation between the pattern and wood. Note I put the pattern first onto the wood and then cover with clear packing tape. Some folks do it the other way around.

Id say run your DP faster, and back out of the hole a couple times to clear the drill shavings. Also, what wood are you drilling?I assume its something pretty soft, or fiber cored?

I would agree with the glue thing, also, make sure you sand alittle before putting your pattern on, and wipe off the dust. I also use 3m but mine preferants is the 3m 45 it drys faster, and doesn't seam to be so wet. or foamy. as the 77. it also does not come off till I take it off. 3m 77 is good adhesive I just like the 3m 45 more. your friend Evie
