That can depend on the box designer. Some boxes have the lid liner as a seperate pattern that is just a hair smaller that the inside and makes a nice fit. Other box tops are cut to fit just over the top, on the outside of the box sides to again, make a nice fit. e-mail me at: sp_343@yahoo.com I can try help you by send pictures of plans that I have completed...we'll figure this out! Chris

The fall issue...with the Intarsia Bull Elk on the cover...I see the pumpkin box pattern and the Ribbons & Bow box pattern...but I only see and "outer" line and "inner" line. Which one are you working on? Or do I have the wrong issue out?

On the pattern with the three lines for the lid. You cut on the line for the first (inside)line. Leave the second (middle) line alone. Cut the third (outside) line. DON'T peel off the pattern yet...leave it on the lid liner piece. Now, there should be another pattern for the lid itself. Cut that out. Then glue the lid piece and the lid liner piece (with the pattern on it) together. Make sure the pattern can be seen. Once dry, then cut on the second (middle) line...you will be cutting through both pieces of wood and there you have a matching lid and lid liner. The lid liner will be on the outside of the box on that pattern. Other box designs have a lid pattern and liner pattern with just one line each. With that you cut those pieces out and glue the liner to the middle of the lid to match the in side design of the box that you made. The lid liner will be hidden inside the box on that type of pattern.

Brian, Everyone who creates a box pattern uses a different system for the lid liner. The simplest one, as far as I'm concerned, is to measure the top opening of the box after cutting the inside but before you put the base on, so you can trace what you've actually cut. Then cut your liner to that size, sanding so it just fits nicely inside. Be careful when you glue it to the lid to center it properly. This gives you a lid that sits on top of the box, with the liner keeping it in alignment. I think the instructions I gave in the bow box (Fall, 2008) should be clear, but if you have any questions, just ask. Carole |
