Default Hegner Spring Snapped

I have a Hegner Multicut 1 & the spring snapped today, I've had it from new about 6 years.

I live in the UK, so I've emailed Hegner UK about a replacement as they don't list parts for sale on their site. I know they can be bought by mail order from advmachinery.com in the US.

Anyone else with a Hegner had a snapped spring? I suppose 6 years is pretty good going for a spring to be pulled back & forth thousands of times.

I've had mine only approximately a year so it hasn't happened to me yet. I have gone through many of the blade clamps though 'cause I tend to tighten them too much.

The springs on all but 2 Hegner models are the coiled type, whereas there is a zig zag spring on the multicut 1 & polycut 3.

I was surprised at the break, considering these saws are so well made. I do have a habit of unclamping the blade before the arm completely stops moving, maybe this has something to do with it snapping.

I saw. I am just curious. are you tighting the blade down tight. I think that might be the problem. my dealer told me, DONT Do That. I have had my Hegner for 6 years or more, and I have never had any problem , except user ar. just a thought. it might be the impho that you get to make your saw so ridged. your friend Evie some good blade work better if you tighten them down really tight. so they don't weave back a forth . thats why I stick to the olsen or other blades.they are thicker and don't kneed the tention so much.

6 yrs is good, I blow the spring on the back of my Hawk at least once a year. They say it's been a common problem and told me not to tighten the screws that hold the spring in to be very tight...that's a great idea so now the screws vibrate loose over time and fall out onto the floor to never be seen again. What they say makes sense and not at the same time, as if you tighten the screws holding the spring in, then the spring can't move back and forth, only up and down, which means eventually metal fatigue will break the spring. I suggest a different screw and spring design where the screw basically has a washer welded a 1/16 below the head of the screw and the spring sits in that open space, so you can tighten the screw down without clamping the spring.

I don't tighten too much, if anything I probably am too slack as the tension knob has a habit of working loose...though I think this may be due to the tension rod becoming greasy due to oil residue from when I spray the bearings. I use Niqua blades (flying dutchman under another name), Olson blades are a bit too thick & aggressive for the kind of work I do (cutting paper), they do require more tightening than Olson blades.

I have an rbi saw aswell which i don't use much, so I removed the spring off it & tried that, it works ok for the time being.

I emailed Hegner in the UK but no reply. I'll phone them & ask about a replacement, or get one from advmachinery.

Ok, you have got me hooked...when you say you cut paper...may I ask what you mean by that. I have two Hegners and have broken the spring one time in 7 years. And Charlie, don't feel bad, I am always breaking those little screws myself.
