Default Puzzle attempt.

I had some free time this weekend after completing this Dragon Clock. So I thought I would try my hand at a puzzles. Constructive Criticism welcome.
The picture is from the Canton Texas First Mondays Magazine. I cut it pattern free hand. It is an 8 x 10 puzzle.

Nice 1st attempt, clean and neat. Isn't freehand cutting fun. I love it. It's good that you avoided 4 pieces meeting at each corner. Nice shapes to the pieces. Did you intend for some of the pieces not to interlock? What blade did you use? Did you glaze before or after cutting? What did you glue the picture to and with what? Make many more puzzles for yourself and others to enjoy.

Pete,
As a new puzzler myself, I still haven't got the knack of free hand and use overlays myself. I'm burning through some wood practicing my freehand, but am not confident yet. Keep up the puzzling. I really enjoy it, since as long as you don't lop off one of the locking pieces, you get a little freedom in the cutting.

Back to picture, it looks a montage of old cans and bottles. Would that be a can of "Pearl" in the upper part of the frame?

Soooooooo many questions, so little time.
(huh?)
avoided 4 pieces meeting at each corner?
pieces not to interlock?
glaze before or after cutting?
What did you glue the picture?

The only one I can answer is what glue and to what.

Spray adhesive and 1/8" Baltic birch. I didn't try to avoid the corners it just came out that way, and not interlocking also just happened. No glaze used. (for what?) I have never made this type of puzzle before. Am I missing something. Oh I used 1 (that's right ...one) "#2 F/D Polar blade". Thank for the compliments.

John B I liked the picture because of the Tin of Vermont Maple syrup. I was born in Vermont. Thanks. The wood is one of the timbers I received after getting honorable mention in the CC&W magazine contest last year, Thank you THE HANDSOME WOODMAN for the great wood. I don't know who's pattern the Dragon belongs to, But thanks to them also.

Jim I am not sure what that can is. I'll have to look at the original pic to see if I can figure it out.

PS if any one knows who made the pattern let me know so I can post it.

Great, Pete, especially if that's your first puzzle attempt.

No criticism here. As you do more and more your locking tabs will become tighter and you'll discover new ways to cut pieces.

This is the kind of picture that makes me drool. I see all sorts of pieces for my particular line-cutting style. The BEE box would be 2 - 3 pieces for the black/yellow portion and 2 for the red part. The Camel would be a piece on its own. All the edges of the boxes and containers would be the edges of puzzle pieces. That's the weird way I look at pictures - not in any way directions for you to follow, but you might want to give it a try if it suits your interests.

Keep it up - and have phun..... Carter

Well done Pete, you are a mile ahead of me on this one. My tries so far have gone into the burn pile. I think I will stick to a cutting pattern for a bit. Until I can get a better handle on what works well and what does not.

Alan.

Pete, those questions may come as a result of the "Puzzle Instructions" for freehand cutting I wrote a few years ago. Here's the link to them"

Woodworking Friends - Login

Not in those instruction is the timing of the gloss spray. I give the mounted picture one thick coat before I start cutting, and I let that coating dry for at least 24 hours.

Happy to help in any way..... Carter
